Screenwriting Begins With the Very First Word... Every Film Tells a Story... Write the Unexpected...

The Idea: Begin with the unique idea or concept. What story do you want to tell?  How do you want to tell this story? Who is going to tell your story? What is your message?

High Concept: An idea that is pitchable with a few words or sentences that precisely describes the concept of the story. It is appealing, intriguing, and you want more. Most producers consider this highly commercial. A "soft" concept is harder to describe and explain in a few words.

Logline: Told in a few words or sentences that clearly conveys the overall concept of your screenplay.  Think of a tv guide description of your script. To be effective, one must understand the idea and be grabbed my it.

Synopsis: Brief outline of the plot of your screenplay. Length of a synopsis can vary.

Treatment:  Detailed outline of your screenplay, beginning, middle, and ending, hitting all the pivotal plot points. Treatments can vary in length from one page to 30 or more.

Hook:  Open your story with a hook that grabs the audience. End scenes and plot points with hooks that makes the audience want more.

Backstory:  Events and moments that formed your characters before your story begins.

Characters:  Unique, refreshing, individualized, realistic, multi-dimensional. Develop character arcs and growth.

Dialogue:   Distinctive voices that are consistent, refreshing,  and jump off the page.
